Brittany Coppedge

One of the things we've always loved about gymnastics is it's a family. Competitive gymnasts spend a lot of time in the gym and at competitions. Parents do as well: you get to meet some wonderful young ladies and seriously dedicated parents. Unlike a lot of sports, parents routinely pull for all of the competitors. Sure, you would like your gymnast to do a tenth better, but all of these kids are winners.

One of these wonderful young ladies was a Level 9 gymnast from Knightdale Gymnastics named Brittany Coppedge. Our daughter was not at Knightdale, but we pulled for Brittany at meets just like we did for everybody. Brittany was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer and left us shortly after Christmas in 2006, far sooner than she should have - she was nineteen years old. Her passing was a harsh lesson in just how fragile life is and how quickly a young person with limitless potential can be taken from her family, friends, and community.

On Sunday, February 28, 2009, Knightdale Gymnastics held its second annual Brittany Coppedge Invite to raise money for Brittany's Battle, Inc, the non-profit organization set up to raise money to fight cancer and support families engaged in the battle. One hundred and fourteen gymnasts came from near and far to compete and see some great competition. As always, everyone was a winner.

Times are tight for everyone, but this is a cause worth supporting. Take a moment to think about how you would feel not needing to go to the gym anymore - for all of the wrong reasons. Then, if there is any way you can, click on http://brittanysbattle.org and make a donation to a great cause.

Thanks!
